“Ruby and Me”

Ruby, a scant 2# of fluff;
A lap-nester who
purrs herself to sleep.
While I, recently widowed,
plucked cross-country
to bear near family,
cry into the night.

In tandem, Ruby and I
create this new life, with
a howdy to neighbors and
their lessons on recycling.
Ruby finds her litter box while
I explore my grief.

We are good together, Ruby and me. If
one oversleeps, the other
bugles a wake-up call.
Early risings are essential,
to do what needs to be done
so the kids can’t say
we aren’t safe to live alone.
